Speaker: Jason Miller, DACM, LAc The "digital" makeup of our genes is affected by complex interactions with the environment in which they exist. This "analog" interface of our DNA with the environment is known as epigenetics. Through the interactions of our genome with the surrounding ecosystem of our bodies and environment, phenotype (the outward expression of the organism) is determined. We explore the TCM concept of Jing/Essence: the role it plays in determining health span, how to identify Essence deficiency in Taoist terms, and how to overlay the study of modern genetics onto the energetic diagnosis of the patient. We will review key SNP's (genetic variations) and their metabolic pathways, and how the application of synergistic herbal and nutritional medicine formulas can alter gene expression and support the overall health of our patients.
