21SW11 - In-Depth Look at Centella Asiatica

Format: Audio

Speaker: Jillian Stansbury, ND Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) is a low-growing, wetland Apiaceae family plant used widely in the herbal medicine traditions of India, Asia, and Africa. This presentation reviews the numerous medicinal applications including the use of Centella as a wound-healing agent useful in topical applications as well as internal consumption. We review the modern research on unique organic acids and triterpenoid compounds with vulnerary actions. We will also examine Centella's indications for neurologic conditions from head trauma to nerve disease and neurologic inflammation. Since it is high in minerals and nutrients, Centella can also be used for bone and connective tissue trauma and disease. We look at the research on Centella for autoimmune disorders, limiting fibrotic degeneration and offering protective effects on a variety of tissues. We discuss the use of this versatile plant in many food-like preparations and medicinal formulas.
