Speaker: Jillian Stansbury, ND
This session will explore the phenomenon of autophagy and define cellular mechanisms including the formation of phagosomes and the delivery of ubiquitinated proteins to proteasomes involved. The ability of cancer cells to escape autophagy will also be detailed to explain why promotion of autophagy is desirable for general longevity, yet targeted inhibition of autophagy is a goal in chemotherapy to induce the death of cancer cells. Common signaling pathways involved in autophagy and apoptosis will be mentioned including mTOR signals and the rapamycin drugs that affect them. Lastly the difference between autophagy and senolysis will be covered, and of course herbal medicines and natural products that promote autophagy will be detailed throughout.
