The design of NIH-sponsored clinical trials in St. John's wort for depression, and ginkgo in memory disorder will be used as examples for discussing methods of proper trial design that both assure interpretability and enhance the prospect of subsequent publication of results. What can and did go wrong in these trials will be the subject of discussion.
