Anthraquinone glycosides such as aloin, emodin, and rhein have long been used to promote peristalsis in cases of atonic colon, but they have also shown anticancer and antifibrotic effects, even with topical application. Herbs containing anthraquinone glycosides are reviewed and current research on novel applications is presented.
