Speaker: Kenneth Proefrock, NMD
Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are the most common cause of illness in children under five worldwide, with most children experiencing multiple respiratory infections each year regardless of location or socioeconomic status. The majority of upper respiratory infections (URIs) are viral in origin and can predispose children to secondary bacterial complications involving the sinuses, ears, and lower respiratory tract.
This lecture reviews practical, naturopathic strategies for supporting children and families through acute respiratory illness, including the natural course of these conditions and ways to safely assist the body’s healing process. Participants will learn specific botanical medicine approaches using tinctures, powders, topical applications, and hydrotherapy, alongside discussion of commonly prescribed medications, antibiotic resistance, and potential herb–drug interactions. Clinical guidance will include fever management, nasal sprays, nebulizers, eye washes, and the use of Southwest native botanicals such as Eriodictyon, Anemopsis, Larrea, Hyptis, Bursera, and Rudbeckia.
