26SW04 - The Stagnant Liver: East and West

Format: Video

Speaker: Paul Bergner, Medical Herbalist

“Liver stagnancy” is an important concept in both traditional Western medicine and Chinese medicine, but the concepts in the two systems are very different. They require a different materia medica, with little overlap. We will describe the anatomy and physiology of the liver, the portal venous system, and the biliary tree and how diet and herbs may interact with these. The Chinese organ system is not equivalent to the anatomical liver in Western medicine but is a broader, functional concept. We will describe the “liver” in the Chinese organ system, with a focus on the family of syndromes related to “constrained liver chi” a very common presentation in contemporary patients. We will discuss lifestyle and
dietary causes, and describe appropriate herbs that overlap in Chinese and Western herbalism.
