A model for the study of herbal materia medica from four different directions: folk medicine, modern science, case reports/personal experience, and shamanic/instinctual healing. Discusses the contributions of each direction, and introduces a model for integrating them into a whole understanding of the therapeutic actions of a particular botanical medicine. Examples used are black cohosh and Viburnum spp.
