The ability of cancer cells to escape autophagy will also be detailed to explain why promotion of autophagy is desirable for general longevity, yet targeted inhibition of autophagy is a goal in chemotherapy to induce the death of cancer cells. Common signaling pathways involved in autophagy and apoptosis will be mentioned including mTOR signals and the rapamycin drugs that affect them.
