A very special extra opportunity is again available this year- a trip into Canyon de Chelly, the sacred holy land of the Navajo people. The trip is organized by Tori Hudson, ND group leader and a frequent visitor to the canyon. It is guided by John and Lupita McClanahan of Footpath Journeys (www.footpathjourneys.com) and assisted by herbalist Mimi Kamp.

Our daily activities include moderate hikes up and down the canyon walls and to Anasazi ruins. The stories of the Navajo inspire and delight: Navajo and Anasazi history, cultural insights, ceremonial healing ceremonies and some of the healing traditions. We hear of the birthing traditions, Navajo spirituality, and "the beauty way".
We usually visit Marie, another canyon residentt, an 80 year old traditional weaver and sheep herder who lives alone in the canyon. She does not speak English but she is a delight and an incredibly rare woman to meet and to experience. Our guide, Lupita, will interpret for us. For many in the past, this has been the highlight of their trip.
At night, we sit around the fire and talk; Jon or Lupita also tell some stories: grandfather fire, stories from Lupita’s childhood living in the canyon in the traditional ways, and more. This year, we have a special addition, that of an herbalist, Mimi Kamp, who has been working with native herbs and flower essences in the southwest for over 30 years.
I have been to the canyon many times in the last four years. Jon and Lupita they have become close friends and deeply meaningful teachers. They are beautiful in their ways and speaking and living. Their spirituality and their commitment to living their lives in keeping with their traditional spirituality is evident in all that they do. My life has changed in wonderful ways as a result of knowing them.
