Southwest Conference on Botanical Medicine 2005, Tape #6

Title: The Antiviral Materia Medica

Speaker: Paul Bergner

This talk begins with an overview of "antiviral" herbs, and gives the opinion that, except for the occasional topical application for viral infections of the skin, botanicals probably do not have virucidal properties.  Many plants have been used traditionally to enhance resistance to viral infections, and recent advances in immunology have uncovered possible novel mechanisms for their action, including effects on TH-1/TH-2 balance and other effects on the expression of heat shock protein and toll-like receptors.

The effects of astragalus, echinacea, ginseng, shizandra, calendula, elderberry, ligusticum, turmeric, licorice, reishi and other botanicals on the viral life-cycle and the body's defense mechanisms are presented.
