Medicines from the Earth 2004, Tape #8

Title: Herbs and Complementary Therapies for Chronic Back Pain

Speaker:  David Winston

A large part of this lecture deals with the risks and possible benefits of surgery and drug treatment compared with herbal protocols tailored to the specific symptoms.  The herbal protocols include general recommendations for back pain, as well as specific formulas for neck pain and whiplash, and back pain due to fibromyalgia and osteoporosis. Herbs covered include black cohosh, St John's wort, wood betony, kava, Solomon's seal, teasel, skunk cabbage and many anti-inflammatory herbs.  Nutritional supplements include bromelain, MSM, glucosamine sulfate and more. Recommendations for hydrotherapy, bodywork and exercise are also included. There was not quite enough time to cover all the material in the lecture, so the proceedings article is a valuable adjunct to the tape.
