Southwest Conference on Botanical Medicine 2003, Tape #2

Title: From Flaxseed to Fenugreek: Effectively Managing Diabetes with Botanicals

Speaker: Kenneth Proefrock, ND

Fenugreek is a common ingredient in curry spices and is often added to Middle Eastern breads.  Modern researchers have taken a great interest in it; confirming that the ground seeds stabilize blood sugar in diabetic patients, reduce cholesterol levels and normalize hormones.  The chemical makeup of the seeds is presented, and methods of administering it in the diet and as a tea and poultice are described.  Flaxseed oil is the richest in omega 3 fatty acid which is considered essential to health.  The effects of fiber in flaxseed on blood sugar, and the mechanisms of this regulatory action are discussed at length.
