Medicines from the Earth 2003, Tape #12

Title: The Use of Phytochemicals in the Elimination and Biotransformation of Environmental Toxins, Part 2

Speaker: Robert Rountree, MD

This lecture begins with a description of the galaxy of toxins in our environment: herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, synthetic medications, cosmetic additives and many more. Disorders linked to toxicant exposure are also well-known: chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, muscle weakness, lowered immunity, etc.  The good news is that we can aid our bodies in transforming and eliminating the toxins to maintain and/or restore health.

The second part of this presentation gives details on methods for detoxification and excretion of toxins. The fat soluble compounds are the most challenging to eliminate.  The chemical pathways for their elimination are described (phase 1 and phase II liver enzyme systems), and factors which influence their efficiency.
The general principles: minimize exposure, insure adequate hydration, optimize bowel health, enhance antioxidant reserve, optimize mitochondrial function and assist and balance the endogenous transformation of toxins.  A host of dietary and supplemental factors are described to achieve these ends.

A fascinating presentation for anyone concerned about the level of toxins in our environment and our bodies.
