Southwest Conference on Botanical Medicine 2001, Tape #26

Botanical Considerations for Lung Cancer

Kenneth Proefrock, ND

Begins by describing theories for treatment of cancer.  Regular chemotherapy aims at damaging or slowing the reproductive rates of cancer cells.  An interesting idea covered in this talk is that cancer is undifferentiated tissue.  If a therapy is less directed at killing this tissue, and more directed at motivating the tissue to differentiate properly, great strides could be made in creating cancer treatments which are far less toxic to the rest of the body.

The nebulizer is an underutilized tool for the treatment of lung cancer patients.  It is a small machine that pumps an aerosol solution of medication into the lungs. A number of botanical agents can be used in the nebulizer with good effect for lung cancer. These include licorice, blood root and lobelia.  Guidelines for the use of the nebulizer are included.
